The author studies Willmore surfaces and constrained Willmore surfaces in the sphere. The considered class of surfaces consists of those that can be obtained as a tensor product surface of two planar curves. The easiest such example is the well-known Ejiri torus. The author shows that among all Willmore surfaces which are obtained as a tensor product, the Ejiri torus minimizes the Willmore functional. He also shows that all Willmore surfaces which are obtained as a tensor product are unstable if the codimension is sufficiently great. In the final section of the paper, the author then considers similar problems for the class of constrained Willmore surfaces obtained as tensor products of curves.
