This paper is devoted to the study of so-called permutation cellular automata (CAs), especially their dynamics. More specifically, it extends one-sided permutation CAs that were studied before by two of this paper's authors and introduces the formalism that is required to analyze the dynamics of one- and two-sided permutation CAs. By reading this paper, the reader will get insights into the nature and dynamics of one- and two-sided permutation CAs. Yet, I somehow got the impression that these constructs have been conceptualized for the sake of the construct itself, which is confirmed by the fact that the authors of this paper seem to be the only ones studying them. Even though I strongly agree that fundamental research is one of driving forces underlying advances in the field of mathematics, I would have liked to read something on the applicability of the studied concepts from a broader perspective. In my opinion, this could have aroused interest from the community, as such uncovering them to others. | |||
