For a function \(f\in L^2(\mathbb{D},dA_\alpha)\), the author considers the Hankel operator \(H_f\) on the weighted Bergman spaces on the unit disk. The author gives new necessary and sufficient conditions on \(f\) so that the Hankel operator \(H_f\) is, respectively, bounded, compact, or is in the Schatten \(p\)-class. This subject was earlier studied by other authors and there are known properties of the Hankel operators for certain classes of \(f\), for example, in [\textit{J. Arazy, S. D. Fisher} and \textit{J. Peetre}, Am. J. Math. 110, No. 6, 989--1053 (1988; Zbl 0669.47017)], the Hankel operators \(H_{\overline{f}}\), where \(f\) is analytic, were considered. The author presents a new proof of Arazy-Fisher-Peetre condition for \(H_f\) to be in Schatten \(p\)-class for \(1<p<2\).
