Let \((X,\rho)\) be a complete metric space, \(C(X)\) be the collection of all nonempty closed subsets of \(X\) and \(T\:X\to C(X)\) be a set-valued mapping. Assume that the function \(f_{\rho}\:X\to \mathbb{R}\) given by \(f_{\rho}(x)=\rho(x,Tx)\) is lower semicontinuous on~\(X\). For a scalar \(b\in(0,1)\), set \(\mathcal I_b^x=\{y\in X : b\rho(x,y)\leq\rho(x,Tx)\}\). Assume that there exists \(b\in(0,1)\) and \(\alpha\:[0,+\infty)\to[0,b)\) such that \(\limsup_{r\to t}\alpha(r)>b\) for each \(t\in[0,+\infty)\). The authors prove that, if for any \(x\in X\) there is \(y\in\mathcal I_b^x\) such that \(f_{\rho}(y)\leq\alpha(\rho(x,y))\max\{\rho(x,y),f_{\rho}(x)\}\), then \(T\) has a fixed point. Using the scalarization method, they apply this result to obtain a fixed point result for set-valued mappings in cone metric spaces in the sense of \textit{L.-G. Huang} and \textit{X. Zhang} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 332, No. 2, 1468--1476 (2007; Zbl 1118.54022)]. Some appropriate examples are presented. | |||
