A ``natural'' mechanical system is one whose Hamiltonian is the sum of kinetic and potential energies. Kozlov proved that if \({\mathcal I}\) is a compact surface and \(H: T^*{\mathcal I}\to \mathbb{R}\) is the Hamiltonian of an analytic natural mechanical system, and if \(H\) has a second independent analytic integral, then the Euler characteristic of \({\mathcal I}\) is nonnegative and so, if orientable, it is homeomorphic to the sphere \(S^2\) or the torus \(T^2\), and, if not orientable, is homeomorphic to a quotient thereof. In this paper, the author presents a new proof of Kozlov's theorem based on his previously published theory of semisimplicity. He also extends Kozlov's result to noncommutatively integrable Tonelli Hamiltonians. The extension is nontrivial because there are Tonelli Hamilonians that are noncommutatively integrable and semisimple on the unit disk bundle, but are not tangent to a semisimple singular Lagragian fibration. An earlier version of the author's result required that the Hamiltonian be reversible. That assumption has been eliminated here. | |||
