Recently, a large number of publications have been dealing with various complex models in optics and Bose-Einstein condensation, with the aim to transform apparently complex equations appearing in those systems to known integrable models. In this work, this approach is applied to a system of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger and Maxwell-Bloch equations with coefficients (in particular, the group-velocity-dispersion and nonlinearity coefficients) in the form of coordinate functions, which may describe, for instance, periodically distributed amplification. The spatial dependence is specially selected in such a form that an explicit transformation to a standard integrable system with constant coefficients is possible. Then, using usual exact two-soliton solutions of the standard integrable system, they are transformed back to solutions of the original inhomogeneous model, in the form of exact solutions for collisions and co-propagation of two solitons, their compression, etc.
