The purpose of the paper is to prove that a known theorem of \textit{E. P. Sobolevskij} [``The superposition operator in Hölder spaces'' (in Russian), VINITI No. 3765-84, Voronezh (1984); ``On a superposition operator'', VINITI No. 8802-V, Voronezh (1985)] is also true in the space of bounded \(\Phi\)-variation functions in the sense of \textit{M. Schramm} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 287, 49--63 (1985; Zbl 0567.26009)]. More precisely, it is proved a sufficient and necessary condition on a function \(f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) under which the composition operator \(Fh(t):=(f\circ h)(t)\), \(t\in [a,b]\) (where \(h:[a,b]\to \mathbb{R}\) is a given function) associated to \(f\) acts in the space of bounded \(\Phi\)-variation functions in the sense of Schramm and satisfies a local Lipschitz condition.
