The goal of this paper under review is a study of the geometry and cohomology of Drinfeld's symmetric space \(\Omega^{d-1}\) (\(d\geq 2\)) over a \(p\)-adic field \(K.\) The space \(\Omega^{d-1}\) was introduced by \textit{V. G. Drinfel'd} [Math. USSR, Sb. 23, 561--592 (1976); translation from Mat. Sb., n. Ser. 94(136), 594--627 (1974; Zbl 0321.14014)] as the non-Archimedean analogue of a (\(d-1\)-dimensional) symmetric domain. As a rigid analytic space, it is equipped with a natural action by \(G = \mathrm{GL}_d(K)\). Shortly afterwards, \textit{V. G. Drinfel'd} constructed in [Funct. Anal. Appl. 10, 107--115 (1976); translation from Funkts. Anal. Prilozh. 10, No. 2, 29--40 (1976; Zbl 0346.14010)] a projective system of étale coverings \(\{\Sigma_n\}\) of \(\Omega^{d-1}\) equipped with the action of \(G\times D^{\times}\times W_K\) where \(D^{\times}\) is the group of invertible elements in the central simple algebra \(D\) with invariant \(1/d\) over \(K\), and \(W_K\) is the Weil group of \(K.\) It is conjectured by Drinfeld and Carayol that the direct limit of the cohomology of \(\Sigma_n\) decomposes into a direct sum of \(\pi \otimes LJ(\pi)\otimes \sigma(\pi)\) over all the discrete series \(\pi\) of \(G\). Here \(JL(\pi)\) is the representation of \(D^{\times}\) corresponding to \(\pi\) under the local Jacquet-Langlands correspondence, and \(\sigma(\pi)\) is the unique irreducible quotient of the Weil-Deligne representation \(L(\pi)\) corresponding to \(\pi\) under the local Langlands correspondence. When \(\pi\) is supercuspidal, \(\sigma(\pi)\) coincides with \(L(\pi). \) The supercuspidal part of this conjecture and an analogous statement concerning the Lubin-Tate tower (the Deligne-Carayol Conjecture) have been explored by several authors by applying global method using Shimura and Drinfeld modular varieties [\textit{P. Boyer}, Invent. Math. 138, No. 3, 573--629 (1999; Zbl 1161.11408)]; \textit{M. Harris}, Invent. Math. 129, No. 1, 75--119 (1997; Zbl 0886.11029); \textit{M. Harris} and \textit{R. Taylor}, The geometry and cohomology of some simple Shimura varieties. With an appendix by Vladimir G. Berkovich. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (2001; Zbl 1036.11027); \textit{T. Hausberger}, Ann. Inst. Fourier 55, No. 4, 1285--1371 (2005; Zbl 1138.11329)]. The goal of the present paper is a study of the supercuspidal part of the cohomology of \(\Sigma_1\) using a purely local method. The author shows that the middle degree cohomology group of \(\Sigma_1\) realizes the Drinfeld-Carayol conjecture for the supercuspidal representation of level zero.
