The superconvergence of the finite volume method is studied for nonmonotone nonlinear elliptic problems in two dimensional domain. The main result of the paper is the derivation of gradient superconvergence error estimators for a linear finite volume approximation as a perturbation of the corresponding finite element approximation. Asymptotically a posteriori error estimate is also given in \(L_1\) norm based on superconvergence estimate. The theoretical convergence rates and efficiency index are verified as the mesh size goes to zero for a two dimensional nonlinear elliptic problem with a known solution.
