The authors give an alternative proof of the index formula in the case of a certain generalized Dirac operator acting on spinors defined over oriented even dimensional spin manifolds. The generalized Dirac operators are defined using the second canonical -- also called Lichnerowicz -- connection, i.e., the unique Hermitian connection whose torsion has vanishing \((1,1)\) part. The proof presented in the article relies on the heat equation and normal forms methods. The index formula is then formulated for null eccentricity closed connected almost Hermitian manifolds of dimension four and closed connected almost Kähler manifolds in arbitrary even dimension.
