The author performs a systematic analysis of affine combination of known subdivision masks. The aim is to generate new effective subdivision schemes with enhanced properties such as regularity. This is done in the stationary and the nonstationary case for the univariate and bivariate settings. These techniques concern the difficult task of creating new schemes in subdivision and can be applied in contexts including, but not limited to, the design of smooth curves and surfaces.
