Let \(X,Y\) be metric spaces and \(E,F\) be strictly convex normed spaces. The paper deals with (surjective and linear) isometries from \(L\left( X,E\right) \) into \(L\left( Y,F\right) \) (the spaces of Lipschitz functions). More precisely, they give complete solutions of the following problems. {\parindent=6mm \begin{itemize}\item[(1)]Characterize those \(X\) and \(Y\) for which any isometry from \(L\left( X,E\right) \) into \(L\left( Y,F\right) \) is a weighted composition operator. \item[(2)]Find a condition which does not depend on \(X\) and \(Y\) such that any isometry from \(L\left( X,E\right) \) into \(L\left( Y,F\right) \) is a weighted composition operator. \item[(3)]Furnish a complete description of an isometry from \(L\left( X,E\right) \) into \(L\left( Y,F\right) \) even when it is not a weighted composition operator. \end{itemize}} The results obtained in this direction are new and interesting since, so far, the situation was unknown even if \(E\) and \(F\) are the spaces of scalars. In particular, the authors prove that the usual conditions of compactness on \(X\) and \(Y\) can be replaced by just completeness. Moreover, they show that, surprisingly enough, even completeness can be dropped whenever \(E\) and \(F\) are not complete. The reader is encouraged to read this remarkable paper for more details.
