The topological space \(M_F\) of \(\mathbb R\)-places of a formally real field \(F\) may be identified with the quotient space of the topological space \(X_F\) of orderings of \(F.\) Although the space \(X_F\) is Boolean, the space \(M_F\) is only compact and Hausdorff and in general not totally disconnected. \textit{E. Becker} and \textit{D. Gondard} [Real analytic and algebraic geometry. Proceedings of the international conference, Trento, Italy, September 21--25, 1992. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter. 21--46 (1995; Zbl 0869.12002)] asked which topological spaces are realizable as \(M_F\) for some \(F.\) The authors show that the family of topological spaces which are realizable in this way are closed under the following constructions: finite disjoint unions, closed subsets and direct products with Boolean spaces.
