The authors consider the traveling wave equations \[ u''+ cu'+ 2u^m(1- u)= 0 \] with \(m\geq 1\) real, under the conditions \[ \lim_{x\to+\infty}\,u(x)= 0,\qquad \lim_{x\to-\infty}\, u(x)= 1. \] Attention is here fixed on large \(m\). Namely, it is known that for each \(m> 1\) there exists a so-called critical wave speed \(c_{\text{crit}}(m)\), whereas for \(c> c_{\text{crit}}\) the decay is merely algebraic, see for example [\textit{N. F. Britton}, Reaction-diffusion equations and their applications to biology. London etc: Academic Press (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers) (1986; Zbl 0602.92001)]. In the present paper the authors establish for the function \(c_{\text{crit}}(m)\) an asymptotic expansion \[ c_{\text{crit}}(m)\sim \sum_{k=1} c_k m^{-k},\quad m\to+\infty, \] with \(|c_k|\leq AB^kk!\) for some positive constants \(A\), \(B\). Moreover, the error term in the asymptotic expansion is carefully estimated and numerical evaluations of the coefficient \(c_k\) are given.
