The author proves that a metric space \((X,d)\) is an ANR if it satisfies the following condition: there is an \(\epsilon>0\) such that every nonexpansive map \(g:L\to X\) of a closed subset of a finite-dimensional compact metric space \((K,\rho)\) of diameter not greater than \(\epsilon\) is extendable to a Lipschitz map \(G:K\to L\) with Lipschitz constant arbitrarily close to 1. He deduces from this a simple sufficient condition for a metric complete space \((X,d)\) to be an ANR. For \(x\in X\) and \(r>0\), let \(B(x,r)\) be the open ball with center \(x\) and radius \(r\). A complete metric space \((X,d)\) is an ANR if there exists a constant \(\epsilon>0\) such that \(\bigcap_{j=1}^nB(x_j,r_j)\neq\emptyset\) for every finite system of open balls satisfying \(d(x_j,x_k)\leq\epsilon\) and \(d(x_j,x_k)<r_j+r_k\) (\(j,k=1,\dots,n\)).
