The authors notice that the fundamental difficulty of pseudospectral methods for polygonal domains consists in the design of proper numerical quadratures. Thus, for convex quadrilaterals they first establish the orthogonal approximation in various Sobolev spaces. By use of this approximation, they provide basic results on Legendre-Gauss-type interpolation on quadrilaterals. The pseudospectral method is eventually formulated and is used to solve Dirichlet and mixed boundary value problems attached to the heat equation. Some numerical experiments on these two problems are carried out in order to underline the spectral accuracy with respect to the space variables.
