    The authors prove a general existence result for some elliptic partial differential equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact surface. The study is motivated by problems arising in conformal geometry. The approach relies on advanced variational methods obtaining, among other things, an improvement of the Moser-Trudinger inequality, a new model space generalizing the space of formal barycenters and a new insight in the homotopy study of sublevels. Examples and open problems are also discussed.
