The authors establish criteria for the existence of positive solutions of the half-linear dynamic equation \[ \big( r(t)\,(x^\Delta(t))^p \big)^\Delta + q(t)\,x^p(t) =0 \tag{*} \] on an arbitrary (unbounded) time scale \({\mathbb T}\), thus unifying and extending the special cases of half-linear differential (\({\mathbb T}={\mathbb R}\)) and difference (\({\mathbb T}={\mathbb Z}\)) equations. Note that no shift is present in the second term of equation (*). A typical result is of the form that equation (*) has a positive solution if and only if there exists a positive rd-continuous function \(u(t)\) satisfying an integral inequality associated to equation (*) via a certain Riccati dynamic equation. Results on nonoscillatory (hence positive or negative) solutions e.g. from the work of \textit{P.~Řehák} [Nonlinear Funct. Anal. Appl. 7, No. 3, 361--403 (2002; Zbl 1037.34002)] are not mentioned in the paper. In the last section the authors consider an advanced dynamic equation with the second term in (*) being of the form \(q(t)\,(x(t+\tau))^p\). However, the time scale \({\mathbb T}\) must be restricted in this case to have the property that \(t+\tau\in{\mathbb T}\) for all \(t\in{\mathbb T}\).
