The paper is devoted to an elementary proof of Pontryagin's duality theorem for compact and discrete abelian groups. The authors' approach is based on an elementary proof of the Peter-Weyl theorem due to Prodanov that makes no recourse to Haar integral. As applications of this approach the authors obtain proofs of the Bohr-von Neumann theorem on almost periodic functions, the Comfort-Ross theorem on the description of the precompact topologies on abelian groups, and the existence of Haar integral on locally compact abelian groups.
