Consider a subharmonic function of order \(\rho (0<\rho<1)\) in the right half-plane. Let M(r,u) be its maximum there on \(| z| =r\). It is known [\textit{M. Essén}, Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 75, 127-131 (1969; Zbl 0184.330)] that the condition \(u(\pm ir)\leq \cos(\pi \rho /2)M(r,u)\) implies the existence of the limit of \(M(r,u)/r^{\rho}\) as \(\rho\to \infty\), the limit being positive or \(+\infty\). The author shows that the latter case must occur if co\(s(\pi\rho\) /2) in the condition is changed with co\(s(\pi\rho\) /2)-h(r) where h(r) does not approach 0 too rapidly as \(r\to \infty\). A generalization of an analogous theorem by \textit{P. C. Fenton} for small subharmonic functions [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 262, 473- 486 (1980; Zbl 0451.31002)] is also given.
