The paper considers a problem of \textit{K. Mahler} [J. Number Theory 1, 512-521 (1969; Zbl 0184.076)] concerning the transcendence of the values of certain functions satisfying an algebraic functional equation of the form \(P(z,f(z),f(Tz))=0,\) where \(P(z,u,v)=P(z_ 1,...,z_ n,u,v)\) is a polynomial in \(z_ 1,...,z_ n\), u and v, and T is a transformation defined by \(Tz=T(z_ 1,...,z_ n)=(z'\!_ 1,...,z'\!_ n),\quad z'\!_ i=\prod^{n}_{j=1}z_ j^{a_{ij}},\) where \((a_{ij})\) is an \(n\times n\)-matrix with non-negative integer entries satisfying certain further conditions. In his earlier work the author [J. Aust. Math. Soc., Ser. A 33, 386-393 (1982; Zbl 0502.10018)] considered the problem in the case \(n=1\), and now the general case \(n\geq 1\) is treated for certain power series f and transformations T.
