The cycle modules of \textit{M. Rost} [Doc. Math. J. 1, 319--393 (1996; Zbl 0864.14002)] have turned out to be very useful in many contexts. In particular they are very important in the study of presheaves with transfers with homotopy invariant cohomology. The goal of the present article is to provide foundations and new examples for theories with transfer over non-perfect fields. This generalizes the methods of Voevodsky which work only well for perfect fields. In order to do this the author modifies slightly the machinery of Rost and carries out his method in several examples. This article also serves as an introduction to several aspects of algebraic cycles.
