An ideal \(I\) of a semiring \(S\) is called a \(k\)-ideal if for \(a\in I\), \(x\in S\) with \(a+x\in I\) or \(x+a\in I\), then \(x\in I\). A semiring \(S\) is called a generalized Clifford semiring if it is an inverse semigroup for the addition such that the additive idempotents form a \(k\)-ideal. For such a semiring \(S\), Green's \(\mathcal H\)-relation \({\mathcal H}^+\) on the additive reduct is a semiring congruence such that each \({\mathcal H}^+\)-class is a skew-ring and \(S/{\mathcal H}^+\) is a semilattice ordered band. It is shown that a semiring is a generalized Clifford semiring if and only if it is a semiring whose additive reduct is an inverse semigroup and which is a subdirect product of a skew-ring and a semilattice ordered band. For such semirings the authors give a structure theorem in terms of a family of pairwise disjoint skew-rings indexed by a semilattice ordered band, and a family of monomorphisms between some of these skew-rings. The results obtained are specialized to the case of Clifford semirings, that is, generalized Clifford semirings for which the underlying semilattice ordered band is a distributive lattice.
