The author shows a topological rigidity result which implies a rigidity result on diagrams of groups. A simple thick 2-dimensional hyperbolic P-manifold is defined as a compact geodesic hyperbolic metric space with certain conditions. Then: Theorem 1.2. Let \(X_1,X_2\) be a pair of simple thick 2-dimensional hyperbolic P-manifolds, and assume that \(\varphi\colon\pi_1(X_1)\to\pi_1(X_2)\) is an isomorphism. Then there exists a homeomorphism \(\Phi\colon X_1\to X_2\) that induces \(\varphi\). Then the notion of geometric amalgamations of free groups is defined and as a consequence of Theorem 1.2 it is shown: Theorem 1.1. Let \(X_1,X_2\) be a pair of geometric amalgamations of free groups. Then \(\lim D_1\) (the direct limit) is isomorphic to \(\lim D_2\) if and only if \(D_1\) is isomorphic to \(D_2\) (as diagrams of groups).
