The author studies existence conditions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ - \Delta u + V(x)u = a(x)g(u) + f(x), \quad x \in \mathbb{ R}^N, \tag{1} \] where \[ a(x) \in L^\infty (\mathbb{ R}^N), \quad a_\infty : = \limsup_{| x| \to \infty } a(x) < 0; \qquad f(x)\in L^2(\mathbb{ R}^N); \] \[ g \in C(\mathbb{ R};\mathbb{ R}), \quad g(s)s \geq 0 \text{ for all }s \in \mathbb{ R}; \] \[ \lim_{| s| \to \infty } \frac{g(s)}{| s| ^{^{p - 1}}s} = 1 \text{ for some },\;0 < p < 1; \qquad \exists A > 0, \;\left| {g(s)} \right| \leq A\left| s \right| ^p\text{ for all } s \in \mathbb R. \] The main result of this note says that the following sufficient condition for the existence of at least one solution is \[ \int a(x)\left| \Phi \right| ^{p + 1} \neq 0 \quad \forall \Phi \in \text{Ker}(-\Delta+ V(x)), \quad \Phi \neq 0. \]
