An infinite matrix \(A=(a_{i,j})_{i,j=0}^\infty\) is said to be strongly regular if \[ \lim_{i\to\infty} a_{i,j}=0, \quad \sup_i\sum_{j=0}^\infty| a_{i,j}| <\infty, \quad \lim_{i\to\infty}\sum_{j=0}^\infty a_{i,j}=1, \quad \lim_{i\to\infty}\sum_{j=0}^\infty | a_{i,j}-a_{i,j+1}| =0. \] Let \(S\) be the shift operator on the Hardy space \(H^2\) of the unit disk. A bounded linear operator \(T\) on \(H^2\) is said to be \(A\)-asymptotically Toeplitz if \(A\) transforms the operator sequence \((S^{*n}TS^n)\) into one that converges strongly on \(H^2\). The special case \(A=I\) (the identity matrix) recovers the original Barría--Halmos notion of asymptotic Toeplitzness [see \textit{J.\,Barria} and \textit{P.\,R.\thinspace Halmos}, Trans.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 273, 621--630 (1982; Zbl 0522.47020)]. The main result of the paper says that if \(A\) is a strongly regular matrix, then every composition operator \(C_\varphi f=f\circ\varphi\) on \(H^2\) is \(A\)-asymptotically Toeplitz. This result is specified to the case of Nörlund matrices. The Cesàro \((C,\alpha)\)-matrix is a particular case of a Nörlund matrix. As a corollary, it is observed that if \(\alpha>0\), then every composition operator on \(H^2\) is \((C,\alpha)\)-asymptotically Toeplitz.
