The article presents a generalization of a unified Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism in a way that is suitable for the unambiguous derivation of second-order field theories. After defining the proposed formalism and presenting its properties, the derivation of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian second-order field theories from this unified model is explained. Then, the formalism is exemplified, in particular on the equation of the loaded clamped plate and the KdV equation. The paper concludes with a detailed presentation of the features of this method in comparison to existing similar ones and its potential for extension to higher-order field equations.
