This paper deals with the stiffness matrix by the finite element method (FEM) for scalar second-order elliptic boundary value problems. The authors show the existence of an \({\mathcal H}\)-matrix approximation to the inverse FEM stiffness matrix with arbitrary accuracy, whereas previous results achieve accuracy up to the finite element error. Numerical examples in two and three dimensions to confirm the theoretical estimates are presented.
