Let \({\mathcal F}\) be a saturated fusion system on the finite \(p\)-group \(S\). Let \(\omega_{\mathcal F}\) be the characteristic (in the sense of Linckelmann and Webb) idempotent of the \(p\)-localized double Burnside ring \(A(S, S)_{(p)}\). The first main result of the paper is the construction a well-behaved transfer map \(\pi\) from the \(p\)-local Burnside ring \(A(S)_{(p)}\) of \(S\) to the \(p\)-local Burnside ring \(A({\mathcal F})_{(p)}\) of \({\mathcal F}\). This involves the construction a stabilization map sending a finite \(S\)-set to an \({\mathcal F}\)-stable element in a canonical way. Next, using this transfer map, the author describes by explicit formulas the idempotent \(\omega_{\mathcal F}\), both in terms of fixed points and as a linear combination of transitive bisets. Moreover, he shows that this is the above transfer map is the map for Burnside rings given by multiplication with the characteristic idempotent. Another main result says that the collapse map from the ring \(A^{\text{char}}({\mathcal F})_{(p)}\) generated by all characteristic elements to the \(p\)-local single Burnside ring \(A({\mathcal F})_{(p)}\), which factors out the right \(S\)-action, is an isomorphism of rings. Finally, by establishing another formula involving characteristic idempotents, the author gets a counter-example to a general conjecture by Park-Ragnarsson-Stancu on the composition product of fusion systems.
