Let f(z) be a meromorphic function of finite order, \[ K(f)= \limsup_{r\to \infty}(N(r,0)+N(r,\infty))/T(r,f). \] R. Nevanlinna conjectured an explicit greatest lower bound \(\kappa\) (\(\rho)\) for K(f), where \(\kappa\) (\(\rho)\) depends on the order \(\rho\) of f(z). The author introduces, for any measurable \(E\subset [-\pi,\pi]\), \[ S(t,E)=(1/2\pi)\int_{E}\log | f(te^{i\theta})| d\theta +N(t,\infty) \] and proves \[ c(\rho,f)=\kappa (\rho)\lim \inf_{t\to \infty}S(t,E)/T(t,f)\leq K(f) \] for several large subclasses of the class of meromorphic functions. An example of such a class are the f(z) which are quotients of two canonical products of genus q and whose characteristic function satisfies \(\int^{\infty}T(t)t^{-1- \rho}dt=\infty.\) In the second paper is is proved that for f(z) which are quotients of two canonical products and whose lower order \(\mu\) and order \(\lambda\) satisfy \(q\leq \mu <\lambda <q+1\) \[ \sup_{\mu <\rho <\lambda}c(\rho,f)\leq K(f). \]
