The paper is devoted to a detailed study of a regenerative system (M,X). Here M is a closed random set on \({\mathbb{R}}\) and X is a process indexed by \({\mathbb{R}}\) such that \((M-D_ t\cap (0,\infty),X_{D_{t+\cdot}})\) and (M \(\cap (-\infty,D_ t],X_{\cdot \wedge D_ t})\) are conditionally independent given \(X_{D_ t}\) where \(D_ t=\inf \{s\in M:\) \(s>t\}\).
