The author constructs an infinite ascending chain \({\mathcal V}_1\subset{\mathcal V}_2\subset\cdots\subset{\mathcal V}_n\subset\cdots\) of semigroup varieties such that: 1) each \({\mathcal V}_n\) is generated by a finite \(0\)-simple semigroup; 2) each \({\mathcal V}_{2k-1}\) has no finite identity basis; 3) each \({\mathcal V}_{2k}\) has a finite identity basis. Reviewer's remark: Several proofs in the paper appear to be insufficient, including the proofs of the crucial Lemmas 4.1 and 4.5.
