    The paper deals with boundary value problems for functional differential equations of the form \(x''(t)= f(t,x_t,x_t')\), \(0\leq t\leq T\); \(\alpha x(t)- \beta x'(t)=\mu(t)\), \(-r\leq t\leq 0\); \(\gamma x(t)+\delta x'(t)=\nu(t)\), \(T\leq t\leq T+h\), where \(r\), \(h\), \(T\), \(\alpha\), \(\beta\), \(\gamma\), \(\delta\) are nonnegative, \(\alpha^2+\beta^2\neq 0\), \(\gamma^2+\delta^2\neq 0\), \(f\in C([0,T]\times C^2;\mathbb{R})\), \(C=C([-r,h], \mathbb{R})\) and \(x_t= x(t+s)\), \(x_t'= x'(t+s)\), \(-r\leq s\leq h\). The existence of a solution \(x\in X= C^1[-r,T+h]\cap C^2[0,T]\) is proved by means of the Leray-Schauder principle and the a priori bounds technique under the following main assumptions: (1) There is \(M_0>0\) such that for every \(x\in X\), if \(|x(t)|\) achieves its maximum at some \(\xi\in(0,T)\) and \(|x(\xi)|> M_0\), then \(x(\xi)f(\xi,x_\xi,x_\xi')>0\); (2) there is \(\eta\in L^1(0,T;\mathbb{R}_+)\) and \(\psi:\mathbb{R}_+\to \mathbb{R}^*_+\) with \(1/\psi\) locally integrable and \(\int^\infty_0 ds/\psi(s)= \infty\), such that \(|f(t,u,v)|\leq \eta(t)\psi(|v|)\) for every \((t,u,v)\in [0,T]\times C^2\) with \(|u(0)|\leq M_0\).
