The author considers finite element methods for elliptic two-point boundary value problems of second order. As basis functions the usual piecewise linear \(C^0\)-elements are combined with further basis functions defined via Lobatto polynomials. First, selected properties of Lobatto polynomials are derived. Later, these results are adapted to obtain error estimates for the problems under consideration. Finally, simple numerical examples illustrate the practical efficiency of the proposed estimates.
