The Liouville equation can be derived as the high frequency limit of the Helmholtz equation for smoothly varying media, in the context of geometrical optics. The authors establish a priori estimates in appropriate weighted spaces and various forms of Sommerfeld radiation conditions for solutions of the above stationary Liouville equation. On this base, preliminary results are obtained in relation with the conjecture that the mass and energy concentrate on local maxima of the refraction index.
