Let \(X\) be a closed Riemann surface of genus \(g\geqslant2\). A holomorphic triple consists of a pair of holomorphic vector bundles, \(E_1\) and \(E_2\), over \(X\) and a holomorphic map \(\phi: E_2\to E_1\) between them. After fixing the topological types of the bundles and a real parameter, there exist moduli spaces of stable holomorphic triples. The authors study non-emptiness, irreducibility, smoothness, and birational descriptions of these moduli spaces for a certain range of the parameter. These results have applications to the study of the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface into unitary Lie groups of indefinite signature. Another application studied in this paper is the existence of stable bundles on the product of the surface by the complex projective line.
