Let \(S\) be a semigroup; \(a\in S\) is called central if there exist semigroups \(S_1\) with identity 1 and \(S_2\) with zero \(0\) and an isomorphism of \(S\) onto \(S_1\times S_2\) which maps \(a\) onto \((1,0)\). It is shown that the set \(B(S)\) of all central elements of \(S\) (called the Birkhoff centre of \(S\)) is a relatively complemented distributive lattice.
