Let \((X,\omega)\) be a compact Kähler manifold of dimension \(n\), and let \(S\) be a Riemann surface with boundary \(\partial S\). Let \(\{\psi_s\}_{s\in \partial S}\) be a smooth family of Kähler potentials on \(X\) that satisfies \(\omega+dd^c\psi_s>0\). Then it is a well-known fact form pluripotential theory that there exists a function \(\Psi\) which is a weak solution to the Dirichlet problem for the homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation (HMAE) with boundary data \(\{\psi_s\}_{s\in \partial S}\), i.e., \[\begin{aligned} & \Psi(\cdot,s)=\psi_s(\cdot), \ \ \forall \,s\in \partial S, \\ &\pi^*_X\omega+dd^c\Psi\geq 0, \\ &\left (\pi^*_X\omega+dd^c\Psi\right)^{n+1}=0, \end{aligned}\] where \(\pi_X:X\times S\to X\) is the projection on \(X\). \par The maximal rank problem is to determine whether the current \(\pi^*_X\omega+dd^c\Psi\) has maximal rank equal to \(n\) at every point in \(X\times S\). The aim of this paper is to provide an example of the (HMAE) which fails to have maximal rank. The authors proved the following theorem. Let \(\overline {\mathbb D}\subset \mathbb C\) be the closed unit disc and let \((X,\omega)=(\mathbb P^1,\omega_{FS})\). Then there exists a smooth family of Kähler potentials \(\{\psi_s\}_{s\in \partial \mathbb D}\) on \(\mathbb P^1\) such that the solution \(\Psi\) to the (HMAE) is completely degenerate on some open subset \(U\subset \mathbb P^1\times \mathbb D\), i.e., \[\pi^*_{\mathbb P^1}\omega_{FS}+dd^c\Psi=0 \ \text{on} \ U.\]
