Let \(X:=(X,\|\cdot\|)\) be a normed space with the unit sphere \(S_X:=\{x\in:\|x\|=1\}\) and let \(X^*\) be the dual space of \(X\). Recall that \(X\) is weakly uniformly rotund if, for each \(\varepsilon>0\) and \(f\in S_{X^*}\), there exists \(\delta:=\delta(\varepsilon,f)>0\) such that \(\frac12\|x+y\|\leq1-\delta\) whenever \(x,y\in S_X\) and \(\langle x-y,f\rangle\geq\varepsilon\). In this paper, the author studies the following modulus: \(\delta(\varepsilon,f):=\inf(\{1\}\cup\{1-\frac12\|x+y\|:x,y\in S_X\text{ and }\langle x-y,f\rangle\geq\varepsilon\})\). The main results of this paper are: (i) \(X\) is reflexive if \(\delta(\varepsilon,f)>1-\varepsilon\) for all \(f\in S_{X^*}\) and for all \(\varepsilon\in(0,1)\); (ii) \(X\) has weak normal structure if \(\delta(1,f)>0\) for all \(f\in S_{X^*}\); (iii) \(X\) is uniformly nonsquare and has uniform normal structure if \(\delta(\varepsilon,f)>1/2-\varepsilon/4\) for all \(f\in S_{X^*}\) and for all \(\varepsilon\in(0,2)\).
