The Kellogg property for degenerate elliptic equations states that the set of irregular points for the Dirichlet problem on the boundary of a bounded open set in \(\mathbb R^n\) has \(p\)-capacity, \(p > 1\), equal to zero, and the Cartan property says that if a set \(E\) is thin at \(x_o \in \overline{E} \setminus E\), then there is a \(p\)-superharmonic function \(u\) in an open neighborhood of \(x_o\) such that \(\liminf_{x \rightarrow x_o, x \in E} > u(x_o)\), see [\textit{J. Heinonen} et al., Nonlinear potential theory of degenerate elliptic equations. Unabridged republication of the 1993 original. Mineola, NY: Dover Publications (2006; Zbl 1115.31001)]. These properties have been studied in metric measure spaces \(X\) (under appropriate conditions) in the framework of variational integrals based on the use of upper gradients, see [\textit{A. Björn} and \textit{J. Björn}, Nonlinear potential theory on metric spaces. Zürich: European Mathematical Society (EMS) (2011; Zbl 1231.31001)]. Instead the authors consider the Cheeger superharmonic functions based on vector valued gradients [\textit{J. Cheeger}, Geom. Funct. Anal. 9, No. 3, 428--517 (1999; Zbl 0942.58018)] and show that both of these properties remain true. The thinness of a set \(E \subset X\) at a point \(x_o\) is defined in terms of the usual \(p\)-Wiener integral, and positive \(p\)-superharmonic functions are characterized in terms of Radon measures. Properties of finely open and quasiopen sets are also discussed.
