The purpose of this paper is to cast the topological field theory formulation of the parity anomaly and the \(3+1\) dimensional topological insulator into a more general and rigorous mathematical framework using functional quantum field theory. Further, the authors aim to interpret the path integral description of the parity anomaly, together with its cancellation via the bulk-boundary correspondence in a Hamiltonian framework for condensed matter physics application.
