The authors start by considering a two-variable ODE model for populations of proliferative cells and quiescent cells. Previous work has shown the nonlinear stability of the non-zero steady state of this system using the Poincaré-Bendixson theorem. Here they use an energy/Lyapunov method to show that (under certain assumptions) solutions of the model are bounded and tend to the non-zero steady state as \(t\rightarrow\infty\). They then generalise and use this method to prove a similar result for the same model posed on a smooth bounded spatial domain, where both types of cells diffuse. In a second generalisation they consider a three-variable ODE model for proliferative and quiescent stem cells, and a population of early progenitor cells. They prove a similar result for this system using the same technique.
