This paper deals with the notion of intermittency or interrupted equilibrium. The notion appears on the borderline between two paradigms of nonlinear dynamics, order and chaos. There is no rigorous definition of intermittency. At the heuristic level, one speaks of this phenomenon if intervals of chaotic behavior of a system alternate with almost regular ones related as the trajectory passes near a fixed point, or, in other words, if turbulent and laminar phases alternate. The durations of these phases can vary randomly. The phenomenon of interrupted equilibrium is typical in numerous fields of science such as biological evolution, fluid dynamics, economics, etc. Several forms of intermittency have been found so far. For example, the classical Pomeau-Manneville intermittency [\textit{P. Bergé, Y. Pomeau} and \textit{C. Vidal}, Order within chaos: towards a deterministic approach to turbulence. Transl. from the French. New York etc.: John Wiley \& Sons (1986; Zbl 0669.58023)] implies that a system is close to a saddle-node, Hopf, or period doubling bifurcation (accordingly, one distinguishes between three types of intermittency). The intermittency for the relaxation systems is based on the following ideas. Suppose that some system has an invariant manifold \(M\) with a chaotic attractor \(S\) on it. Further, let the invariant set \(S\) be unstable in the direction transversal to \(M\) and asymptotically rapidly eject trajectories in that direction. If such a system is supplemented by a mechanism returning these trajectories to the manifold \(M\) and then to the invariant set S, then one obtains an on-off intermittency: a chaotic mode alternates with rare but asymptotically high bursts. In the present paper, the authors consider another class of models given by singularly perturbed systems of ordinary differential equations with one fast variable and \(n \geq 3\) slow variables. On the basis of the general concepts developed in the literature and the technique of nonclasical relaxation oscillations [\textit{E. F. Mishchenko, Yu. S. Kolesov, A. Yu. Kolesov} and \textit{N. Kh. Rozov}, Periodic motions and bifurcation processes in singularly perturbed systems (Russian). Moskva: Nauka. Fizmatlit (1995; Zbl 0840.34067)], one states conditions for the existence of on-off intermittency modes in such systems.
