Many results of standard Calderón-Zygmund theory have recently been extended to more general non-homogeneous contexts, where the standard doubling condition need not be satisfied. The author describes the reasons that caused him to study singular integrals of Calderón-Zygmund type on non-homogeneous spaces. The author also describes some of the technical devices that made it possible to dispense with the doubling condition.
