Chain sequences are positive sequences \(\{a_n\}\) of the form \(a_n=g_n(1-g_n)\) for a nonnegative sequence \(\{g_n\}\). Sharp estimates for chain sequences are obtained which are used to give sharp estimates for the norms of Jacobi matrices. Applications to unbounded essentially self-adjoint Jacobi matrices are given.
