Let E be a sequentially complete locally convex space. We prove the following generalization of a theorem of Kato: If T is a bounded operator and \(E_ 0\) a closed subspace of E, the relative topology of which is generated by a norm, such that \(B(I-T)\cap E_ 0=\{0\}\) and \(B(I- T)\oplus E_ 0\) is closed, then \(B(I-T)\) itself is closed. We furthermore prove that if T has finite ascent and descent n, then \(B(T^ n)\) is closed and normable. Finally these results are applied in spectral analysis.
