First the authors give a brief introduction to the Conley index and the technical results which will be used in later discussion. Then the basic results relating to Poincaré sections and Poincaré maps are established. The properties of the suspension sequence are developed and the maps and semiflows with compact attraction are also discussed. Finally, examples to examine refinements of their results are given and some open questions are suggested.
