The paper presents an analysis of the Deffuant model of social interactions. The model is based on a nonrandom pairwise averaging procedure on \({\mathbb Z}\) introduced and discussed here. The author investigates what are the final states that can be reached by folowing this procedure, then shows the links between the procedure and the Deffuant model. Using the techniques developed here, the author gives an alternative proof and some further refinements of a recent result by Lanchier, which has identified a critical value (\(\theta_c = \frac{1}{2}\)) for concensus formation in the Deffuant model.
