In this paper, the author provides an explicit description of all components of the Brill-Noether loci for a general \(k\)-gonal curve. Having such a curve with its map to the projective line, the push forward of the corresponding line bundle is a rank \(k\) vector bundle. It is shown that the components are arised from the stratification of the Picard variety by the splitting type of the push-forward bundle. The main idea then to show that these strata are smooth of expected dimension is degeneration to a chain of elliptic curves, each together with a degree \(k\) map to the projective line.
