Let \(R\) be a ring, and let \(\Lambda\) be a subset of the set of all prime ideals of \(R\). The set \(\Lambda\) satisfies prime avoidance if whenever \(I\subseteq \bigcup_{\mathfrak{p}\in \Lambda}\mathfrak{p}\) for some ideal \(I\) of \(R\), then \(I\subseteq \mathfrak{p}\) for some \(\mathfrak{p}\in \Lambda\). The author investigates prime avoidance for arbitrary set of prime ideals in a commutative ring, and establishes conditions under which prime avoidance is satisfied. Several examples and counterexamples are constructed to illustrate the prime avoidance phenomena.
